Lection of Professor Jamese S. Rikoona, Ph.D.
Public universities in the United States have been encountering decreasing public support for their missions and increasing financial pressures due to declining state support. Using the University of Missouri as a case study, current trends will be documented, including reasons for the patterns that significantly affect the teaching and research functions of the university. A possible response for igniting public support – the Engaged University – will be presented. The idea of the engaged university would alter the way academics conduct and frame their work, and would demonstrate more concretely the common good that is served by the public universities.
