As the Internet has become integrated into our societies and economies, it is no surprise to see a proliferation of case law, and regulation to address perceived problems as they arise. At the same time, revelations of mass surveillance, big data analysis, and the dawn of the Internet of Things have created international discussions and pose potential risks to our security. This interactive course is designed to give an essential background and overview to students within the confines of the Internet, International relations and diplomacy. The major topics on agenda revolve around cybercrime, cybersecurity, privacy and surveillance, Internet of Things, and Internet Governance including an overview of the current top-level domain landscape.

Emily Taylor Associate Fellow, Chatham House. Director, Oxford Information Labs Limited
Emily Taylor is an Internet governance expert and an Associate Fellow at Chatham House (the Royal Institute of International Affairs). Emily is Editor of the Journal of Cyber Policy (Taylor & Francis) and is a researcher for the Global Commission on Internet Governance, for which she has published papers on IANA transition and the Privatisation of Human Rights. She is lead author of the EURid UNESCO World Report on Internationalised Domain Names, and has contributed to a review of ICANN's policy development process, and a study on the DNS Marketplace in the Middle East and Adjoining Countries (for ICANN). She served on ICANN’s WHOIS Review Team (as Chair), and the Internet Governance Forum’s Multistakeholder Advisory Group. Educated at Cambridge University, she has worked at Nominet and is currently a director Oxford Information Labs. She has written for the Guardian, New Statesman and appeared on BBC Radio 4’s the Now Show.
Emily Taylor studied at the University of Cambridge (BA), Southbank University, the College of Law London, and the Open University (MBA). She qualified as a solicitor in England and Wales in 1998.
Giovanni Seppia, External Relations Manager, EURid. Giovanni Seppia joined EURid as External Relations Manager in 2007. He is responsible for EURid’s institutional relationships with the European Commission, European Parliament, ICANN and the Internet Governance Forum. Giovanni’s other responsibilities at EURid include marketing, development of the annual EURid strategy plan in cooperation with other departments, business intelligence for the EU region and account management with more than 750 EURid accredited registrars.Giovanni is co-author of the annual World Report on Internationalised Domain Names (EURid, UNESCO), the Middle East and Adjoining Countries DNS Marketplace Study, 2015 (ICANN) and the Latin America and Caribbean DNS Marketplace Study (forthcoming) (ICANN). In 2015, Giovanni was elected non-executive Chair of the Council for European Top Level Domain Registries, CENTR. Previous roles have included European Liaison Manager at ICANN (2006-2007), General Manager CENTR (2004-2006) and Head of External Relations for the Italian Registration Authority (1999-2004).
Giovanni has a degree in Political Science, with a thesis in International Law from the University of Pisa.
